SFP OPTICAL TRANSCEIVERS

SFP Transceivers (Small Form-Factor Pluggable) are optical transceivers supporting data rates of 100Mb, 1Gb or 2Gb, while higher bandwidths (4Gb, 8Gb,16Gb and 32Gb) are supported by SFP+ modules.

They are produced according to the Multi-Source Agreement (SFF-8472 specifications) and compliant with electric and electromagnetic standards.

What is an SFP transceiver? It is a module that consists of a transmitter and a receiver that is used to change optical signal to electric and vice versa. It connects the main board of the switch, router, HBA card or media converter via optical or copper cables.

PARAMETERS

Optical transceivers operate on single-mode or multimode optical cable and can transmit data over a pair of fibers (duplex) or over a single one (simplex).

The maximum data transmission range without regeneration points using the multimode medium is 2km. For single-mode modules it is possible to achieve the range of 120 or even 200km (in case of modules that guarantee power budget of 41dB).

SFP TRANSCEIVERS- TYPES

Standard optical transceivers

Duplex-type transmission. The modules transmit and receive signal on the same wavelength but on two separate fibers, which prevents interference. Possible wavelengths: 850nm/ 1310nm /1550nm. “Grey” SFP transceivers are often categorized as SX, LX, EX or ZX, depending on the optical medium that they support and transmission range.

  • SFP SX

Operates on 850nm wavelength, transmits signal over a multimode optical fiber. Maximum link length: 550m. Additionally, SFP SX+ operates on 1310nm wavelength and has range of 2km. It is color-coded with black or beige.

  • SFP LX

Operates on 1310nm wavelength, transmits signal over a single mode optical fiber. Maximum link length: 20km. It is color-coded with blue.

  • SFP EX

Operates on 1550nm wavelength, transmits signal over a single mode optical fiber. Maximum link length: 40km.

  • SFP ZX

Operates on 1550nm wavelength, transmits signal over a single mode optical fiber. Maximum link length: 80km.

  • SFP ZX+

Operates on 1550nm wavelength, transmits signal over a single mode optical fiber. Maximum link length: 120km.

BiDirectional SFP 2.25G WDM

Simplex-type transmission, transmits two different wavelengths over a single fiber. Reduces the number of fibers necessary for transmission.

SFP 1.25G CWDM

Transmits data in the second and third transmission windows (1270-1610nm) in 20nm intervals allowing up to 18 channels to be transmitted. CWDM transceivers are most commonly used in xWDM system that help optimize the number of optical fibers used.

DWDM (ang. Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing) SFP 10G

DWDM SFP+ transceivers occur in two versions: 100GHz (40 transmission channels) and 50GHz (80 transmission channels). Allow transmission ranging from 1565.5nm to 1528.77nm. Due to very short intervals between individual wavelengths (around 0.8nm), a separate channel is assigned to each wavelength. DWDM transceivers are most commonly used in xWDM system that help optimize the number of optical fibers used.
