Multimode SFP module is designed to operate with multimode fiber (MMF – Multimode Fiber). It transmits data using an optical wavelength of 850 nm or 1310 nm and typically supports the following distances:
- SFP 1 GbE 850 nm – up to 300 m
- SFP 1 GbE 1310 nm – up to 2 km

Fiber patch cords required for multimode modules have jackets in the following colors: orange (older OM1 and OM2 cable generations), aqua/turquoise – OM3 cables, magenta – OM4, or green – OM5.
Extraction latches on multimode SFP modules are usually marked with black color.

Single-mode SFP module is designed to operate with single-mode fiber (SMF – Singlemode Fiber). These modules transmit data using optical wavelengths in the range from 1260 nm to 1675 nm over distances of up to several tens of kilometers, depending on the type. So-called “grey” modules operate at 1310 nm or 1550 nm. Modules used in CWDM and DWDM systems operate at wavelengths in the range of 1260 nm to 1620 nm (second and third transmission window). Fiber patch cords required for single-mode modules have yellow jackets.
