If you intend to use the optical port in your switch, server, media converter or router for copper UTP transmission, you will need an SFP or SFP+ RJ45 transceiver, also known as TX module. The copper transceiver, similarly to the optical ones, is a hot-pluggable device. To make sure that the transceiver will be compatible with your device it is necessary not only to program it accordingly, but an important issue is also the internal build of the module (namely the architecture of the PCB board).

APPLICATION

If your device lacks in RJ45 ports, but you have some SFP or SFP+ ports left, you can use RJ45 transceivers in place of SFP and SFP+ ones. They can obtain speed of 1Gbs (SFP) or 10Gbs (SFP+).

For short links, in which on one side you have an RJ45 port and an SFP or SFP+ port on the other side, you don’t have to install an expensive media converter to convert the transmission from electrical to optical. Instead, use an SFP optical transceiver with an RJ45 connector and run in on a simple LAN UTP RJ45 patch cable. It’s a perfect solution for links up to 100m for data rate of 1G and for links up to 20m for data rate 10G, with the use of UTP cat. 6a/7 cables.

TYPES OF RJ45 MODULES

  • SFP RJ45 1G
The SFP TX module transmits data with up to 1Gbs for 100m distance over a cat. 5 UTP copper twisted-pair

  • SFP RJ45 10/100/1000 TX
The SFP TX module has the smart autonegotiation feature of data rates 10/100/1000 TX Mbs Ethernet, can work up to 100m over a cat. 5 UTP copper twisted-pair.

  • SFP+ RJ45 10G
The SFP+ Rj45 tx module transmits data up to 10gbs for up to 20m distance over a cat. 6a/7 UTP copper twisted-pair. Depending on the patch cable category, the distance can be enhanced or reduced (the higher the category, the longer distance).
